WHO WERE YOU WEARING?

Thrift stores are mainly clothes. Contrary to popular belief it's not all used underwear.

There's something profound to say (though I'm not really the one to say it) about our obsession with clothes and their ultimately disposable nature. Then again, so many of the clothes on the Salvation Army racks was only just recently in the back of grandma's closet, where it hung for the last 34 years. Much of these outfit offerings are ugly, dirty, holey, smelly and/or just plain boring. But I fall in love every time I walk into thrift store when I look at the wonderful tags inside these cast offs.

In the interest of keeping this blog up to date, with my standard two posts a month, and because I just just got beat-up by my dentist this morning (my four wisdom teeth have just gone to the big tooth fairy in the sky), I'm going to do an easy, fairly comment less post, just highlighting these little tapestries sewn into the clothing we used to wear. Hope you enjoy. Just imagine you're in a very tiny art gallery... that smells a bit like moth balls...

Wow! Sammy had his own line of leather jackets? Unfortunately I think a 42 would be a little small on me.

Well, if I remember correctly it was some horrible royal blue suede job, with pseudo-hippie tassels. So me-thinks Sammy didn't have a clothing line for too long.

Wow, what a really lovely post. I love that you highlighted the art in something that goes un-noticed - if you like, the art in the everyday.

And it's very timely inspiration for me because I'm trying to get my act together and design labels for the kids' clothes I sell... and I saw a great tag that I might use as the basis for my tag. Thanks!

Cool, I'm glad other people can appreciate these things.

And who know, 40 years from now maybe someone will be admiring your clothing tag in a second hand store.

The saddest thing is how most of those tags were for Made in the USA, local outfits, probably all long gone. We lost something vital when everything went overseas. Something of the little character in everyday vanished.

What neat little pieces of vintage art... Kind of like matchbooks.

@erinberry

Funny you should mention that. Not too long ago I bought a whole bag of vintage matchbooks at a thrift store for 1.99 -- tons of cool tiny pieces of art. Maybe I'll put up a picture two soon.

Great posts, great blog! Loved seeing all the labels, especially "The Man From California. What made HIM special, eh? Also noted the several European labels, cool. Would love to see the matchbooks sometime when you have the chance!
